Millipedes can live for a very long time, up to ten years. They get along together and are active and entertaining. Overall millipedes can be one of the most easiest pet bugs to care for. One of the most great conveniences about keeping millipedes as pets is how easy they are to feed. Millipedes are omnivores, so they eat pretty much anything and everything. Everything from fruit and veggies to bits of dried pet food are eaten but these must all be considered supplements. Millipede enthusiasts enjoy the fact that many species get reasonably large and can be kept together in colonies. Millipedes are generally protected to handle, but all species must be considered dangerous to the extent that they are able to emit toxic chemicals. Children must be supervised, and hands must be washed before and after handling. Millipedes are often used as “hands on” teaching aids by many educators around the world.

Smoky Oak Millipedes are easy to care for and do very well when kept in small or large groups. This is among the larger millipedes. This species readily mates and breeds in captivity.
